Recording @ OHN
Otter’s Holt North (OHN) is our affectionate name for my home studio. We’ve been busy recording and the spring EP remains our top priority but we may take a bit of time to focus on upcoming performance spots. We’ll let you know more about those as we know more. But while this is all going on, I’ll post a few comments about recording here at OHN.
If you’ve ever done any recording you probably can appreciate just how complex the full range of gear a professional studio maintains. A home studio is quite a different animal. Where a professional studio has to be ready to handle whatever walks in the door, a home studio (in my case, at least) is more about getting the most you can out of a limited set of gear.
As a result, we typically record only one instrument or voice at a time. It is a time consuming process and it requires a lot of discipline, especially when recording the first set of takes (normally the rhythm guitar), but it does allow a very fine degree of control. Currently we have seven tracks in various stages of development. Three have all the instruments and voices recorded and the mixes are in a draft state. The others have guitar and lead vocal parts at a minimum and backing vocals and mixing tasks are in progress.
As we continue working on the project, I’ll add more posts describing the process and how things are going.
